To launch my blog, I would like to talk about the luck of turning a passion into a profession.
My beginnings
My passion for languages started as a teenager when, as a fan of Queen’s songs, I desperately wanted to know what they were about. At the time I was studying French and had absolutely no knowledge of English but, nevertheless, I started translating the song lyrics with nothing more than a small pocket dictionary. My irrepressible desire for knowledge led me to imagine that one day I could work as an interpreter.
A challenge that seemed impossible at the time but, with some bravery and the support of my family, I enrolled at the Scuola Superiore per Interpreti e Traduttori in Milan, the historical seat where famous professionals were trained.
My first steps
I still remember the first time I had the chance to wear a pair of headsets (and not just to listen to the music I was passionate about): a powerful feeling and a sense of responsibility hooked me straight away.
Even before completing my studies, I had already had the chance to try my hand at interpreting along with a classmate (and we were then the only ones to actually work in the profession). That challenge, approached with fear but also with a great sense of duty, had confirmed to me that I was on the right track.
After graduating, I started working immediately as a freelancer, translating for a translation agency that needed to handle so much work at that time that they had to recruit several professionals. This teamwork allowed me to understand the importance of working with others towards a common goal: customer satisfaction.
The importance of a specialisation
With time, I have specialised in my main areas of work: marketing, applied to the fashion, cosmetics and design sectors, with a focus on human resources and tourism. A specialisation born out of my professional passions that are also reflected in the professional field. A specialisation that is cultivated through reading magazines in the sector, using the products for which I then translate the presentations, and choosing the objects I love to surround myself with in my daily life.
Chasing dreams
For me, pursuing a passion means finding meaning in one’s life, not only professionally, but also personally. In fact, private and professional life merge into an endless continuum in the life of a freelancer. Both a blessing and a curse, and it also allows one to find the enthusiasm every day to pursue a project that goes well beyond the simple concept of work.
